Discovery of a Hacking Attempt is Only the Beginning

By Daniel Turbin

If your company successfully warded off a hacking attempt, give yourself a well deserved pat on the back. Many firms aren't so fortunate. Each day, scores of firms are spoiled by successful breeches of their security systems by hackers, who appear to work tirelessly to cause damage to business systems around the world.

If your system was tested by a hacker and held up to that test ( and rather more critically, if it did not ), it should prompt a fast review of everything you've got ready. The attack was stopped this time, yes, but a careful review of your system might reveal the express weakness the hacker was making an attempt to exploit to gain access.

The worse of the 2 eventualities was that you got hacked, but your defenses failed to hold up, and in this case, a review is more vital than ever before. In all cases though, what you do not want to do is to change 1 or 2 passwords and call it done. That is equivalent to sending the hacker an inscribed invitation to return.

In either case, the hacker was likely drawn to a specific area of your network security for a reason, and changing a password isn't going to mend the fundamental reason. It isn't going to do anything to address the core problem. The main point of weakness that the hacker understood in your system that led on to the attempt to start with.

That is the reason why the periodic security audits are so vital. That's the reason why it's so critical that you take the time to see what failed ( and right ) with your safety system in total, and see what thing ( or things ) you can change to make your system's security tougher. Better prepared to stand up against the following attempt, because statistical data aren't on your side, and once a hacker has your scent, it is very likely that he will come back.
